About Author

Leo Nomis was born in Southern California in 1922. His father had been a flight instructor with the U.S. Army Air Service during the First World War and later flew as a stunt pilot in a number of Hollywood movies before being killed in a flying accident in 1932.

His father had been a flight instructor with the U.S. Army Air Service during the First World War and later flew as a stunt pilot in a number of Hollywood movies before being killed in a flying accident in 1932.

Leo volunteered to join the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1940 and served with distinction and not a little notoriety in the Second World War -- firstly with 71 (Eagle) Squadron in the UK, then with 229 Squadron at Malta during the summer of 1942 and 92 Squadron in the Middle East before transferring to the United States Army Air Force (USAAF) in 1943. While with the RAF, Nomis, as a fighter pilot flying Spitfires, participated in several successful aerial combats. After the war's end -- although not Jewish -- Nomis volunteered to fight in 1948 with the embryonic Israeli Air Force during Israel's War of Independence against its Arab neighbors.

He flew the Avia S199 fighter (a Czech version of the ME 109G fighter) on operations with Israel's 101 Squadron and thereby became one of the legendary pilots of the Desert Hawks, a name given to the Avia S199s by Egyptian soldiers. Following his return to the States after the war, Nomis remained in aviation until 1956. He later went into real estate development, from which he retired in 1982.

He now lives with his wife Bonnie in Sherman Oaks, California.
